The Security and Ease of Online Dating

Every unattached person seems to at least consider turning to the Internet for initiating a relationship. Not only has the use of the Internet increased through the years, so too has the acceptance of relationships begun online.  People’s lives seem to be getting busier and busier.  Many people sign up for a quick to establish, free account at a social dating website and have no intentions of taking it any farther.

For others who are genuinely interested in trying to find the right person, signing up for an account is more than a little personal experiment.  The highest rated gay online dating site and a similarly popular dating site for hetersexuals provide many worthwhile features.  Registration is free at both of those highly recommended sites, although most people decide to purchase a premium membership.  Naturally, that next step is optional, and you shouldn’t pay if you’re just playing games.  Actually, you shouldn’t even register if you are not serious about wanting a true dating relationship or more.

How difficult is it to join a quality online dating site? Is it safe?

Not too many years ago, the online dating services were something of a novelty, so they were considered newsworthy. Consumers were sometimes falsely warned that the sites were unsafe, used by predators who were looking for victims. But increased attention to security and awareness on the part of those of us using the services has made a remarkable difference.  In many ways, as long as you use common sense, these sites lead to relationships that are just as safe as those that begin in the neighborhood or at the local club.

Many of the dating sites now offer members ways to talk anonymously at first, then they are allowed to meet via web cam in private chat rooms. Web cams make some people feel more confident prior to any offline meeting.  At the very least, users know who to look for when the eventually meet at a coffee shop or restaurant.

As more people are becoming completely comfortable with online communication and more people have access to the Web at home, at work and nearly everyone in between, online dating sites have flourished.  There are literally tens of thousands of people using these services online simultaneously at the major date sites, including the two that I mentioned and recommended near the beginning of this article.

You can always decide how much information about yourself you are going to reveal.  However, remember that more information is much more valuable, so be patient in filling out the profile information.  If you get tired of it, you can always go back later to continue the process if it turns out to be more time consuming than you suspected.

People at the local bar might lie to you; so, too, might someone online. However, you should never assume that the person you are interested in is being less than truthful.  My experiences indicate that most are completely honest, and many understate their virtues.

Who knows, you may meet the love you’ve been looking for as so many before you have done.

Even Online Dating Isn’t Recession Proof

Despite a strong fourth quarter of 2008 online matchmaking sites like Match dot com and Yahoo Personals are now starting to feel the pinch of an extended Recession. Approximately one year ago online dating sites were described as being in a Recession proof business, however times have changed and the large online dating sites are finally attempting to change with them. There are several reasons why these types of sites are now starting to feel the sting of this economic situation.

One of the reasons it took so long for these sites to catch on was the fact that most online dating sites were still earning revenue from members who signed up for extended memberships. When extended memberships ran out and members did not renew their online dating subscriptions, the revenue that the large matchmaking sites were generating began to drop.

This is a positive development for anyone who is currently debating whether to purchase an online dating membership. Internet personals sites are offering additional incentives than ever before, especially to first time members. Match.com is offering discounted subscriptions and new members can take advantage of Yahoo Personals free trial offer.

Even now as the economy seems to be coming out of the Recession, there are opportunities for conscientious online consumers to shop smart and benefit whether it comes in the form of a free online dating site membership or some other fashion. Despite what some internet dating review sites said earlier in the year, even the romance business has not been unaffected by our most recent Recession. There are still opportunities for good deals and now is the time to take advantage of the ones you find. It is up to the consumer to take the bull by the horns and reap the benefits that this current economic situation has provided. How long these deals will last is uncertain.

Some Plusses of Online Dates

No longer do young people rely upon the old fashioned matchmaking and escorted evenings out. Dating in contemporary times has taken many turns, among these the ever growing popularity of meeting partners online.  This is true of people from nearly all walks of life.

There are so many online dating options out there.  Some are very general in their scope, while others cater to particular demographic groups.  Most have options available for gay dating, as just one example, however gay.com is the clear winner in that demographic.  Others cater to seniors, while others focus upon specific religious affiliations.

Online dating has many benefits. The shy dater can open up and meet other people without worrying about some of the fears that may accompany those first traditional dates. By the time he or she meets the potential paramour, they already know each other well enough that they can skip the small talk and engage in real conversation.

On the other hand, social butterflies love online dating because of love the sheer numbers of potential people with whom they might connect. With the large number of members in most online dating sites, arranging multiple dates in relatively fast succession is simple. The Internet allows for discretion plus you can be quite selective in whom you contact. You choose partners based on common interests gleaned from dating profiles. This is an attractive alternative to approaching a potential mate in a bar going on looks alone.

As the online dating community has grown, so too have the number of vendors willing to help you promote yourself. Professional writers and photographers offer services to assist you with your dating profile. They hawk services to help you attract more hits to your online profile, which obviously helps lead to more dating options.

Dating websites vary on a number of variables. Some require a membership fee to enjoy certain benefits, such as the ability to post a picture or short video.

Especially as you begin to use the various online dating sites you need to be somewhat careful.  Remember that anyone with Internet access has access to these sites. While most of the best know dating sites do take precautions, they usually learn of character flaws only after another member has reported it. When first meeting face-to-face, choose a public place. Don’t give away too much information until you have had a good chance to get to know each other.  Certainly keep your address and specific place of work a secret until then. With a responsible attitude and an open mind, online dating can be fun, safe, and exciting.

The Myths Surrounding Online Dating

There has been nothing short of an explosion in online dating services. There have been some scare stories published in various magazines and newspapers.

Some newspapers have suggested that online dating is really only for sad and desperate computer geeks. This is a long way from the truth.

One common myth is that online dating isn’t safe. The truth is that dating through an online service that requires membership is obviously much safer than dating a complete stranger who you’ve just met in a pub or club.

Some of the best online dating services will do what they can to ensure that their members are as safe as they can be. Cost and commitment that is needed from members means that time wasters are discouraged.

Another common misconception is that online dating is only for computer nerds. The days when computers were operated by white coat wearing scientists have long gone. These days computers are used by everybody, young and not so young.

A magazine article that I once read told readers that all the people using internet dating services were liars who had made up all sorts of fancy details about themselves. People can and do misrepresent themselves, but they do so offline as well. People must always trust their own instincts when meeting people for the first time, but many online dating agencies will take steps to verify personal details as much as they can.

Many people believe that online dating is only suitable for young people. Like the belief that online dating is only for computer geeks, nothing could be further from the truth. Online dating has worked for many people of all ages. I have a couple of close older friends, both in their sixties, who found love and romance through online dating. He runs his own company car leasing firm and she worked for a well known van leasing firm. Their common work experience meant that they hit it off immediately and they are now planning their wedding.

Some have said that internet dating is really for the desperate and the socially inept but this isn’t true. People who sign up to online dating services are generally honest, genuine people who are socially capable. They simply recognize the benefits that the online dating services provide by putting them in touch with prospective partners who share common interests. Another friend, who found love through internet dating, plays guitar in a local jazz band. He is also the owner of a well known local guitar shop. For him, guitars are his life. Internet dating resulted in him meeting a beautiful, talented lady who not only shared his interest in music and guitars but she is also a talented jazz singer.

And the final criticism that I shall address is that online dating is too expensive. I would personally choose the more expensive service as this is less likely to attract those looking for a one-night-stand. The cost of the service should be compared with what it would have cost in dinners and drinks to learn as much about your date.

Internet dating is anticipated to grow in popularity. It provides a cost-effective and time-saving way to meet like minded people with whom you stand a good chance of finding love and romance.
